3 Tips for Your Next Interview
Whether you have an interview for your next admin job, teaching position, freelance gig OR anything in between - consider adding these three tips/considerations in your tool box for situations that commonly arise!
know how to reframe your transferable skills
Playing in an orchestra/ensemble = experience working within a team
Reaching out to multiple presenters to have your group perform = experience in sales
Managing your touring schedule = experience in project management
2. expect “out-of-pocket” questions
Interviewing for a job that has requirements for part-time hours (15-20 hours per week) and the interviewer asking you if you have full-time availability - this happens. Keep yourself grounded. Please do not bend over backwards for these organizations or people. If they are not offering you a full-time salary this is not an appropriate questions for them to ask you. A way to respond in a kind manner but gears the interview back to hopefully more appropriate questions:
As this is for PT employment, I have other roles and responsibilities that take up my time. If this position becomes FT in the future - I would then be happy to discuss having FT availability.
If they push further - you now have your answer as “this is not the teaching role, admin role, or gig” for you.
3. Seeing An Unrelated Degree As a Positive
This one is tough but also common. Often times, organizations will want to train you in “their way”, so don’t feel down about this.
Utilize the tips from #1
Reframe your unconventional path as a benefit to their team. Your way of thinking diversifies and makes a more “well-rounded” team. “Flip the script”
